Jean-Marie Farina (1685–1766) was an Italian-born perfumer who settled in Cologne, Germany, where he founded the world's oldest fragrance house, Farina gegenüber, in 1709. He is most famously credited with the creation of the original Eau de Cologne, a revolutionary citrus-based scent that shifted the perfumery landscape away from the heavy, musk-based fragrances popular during the 18th century.

The signature style of Farina’s composition was characterized by a refreshing, light blend of bergamot, lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, cedar, and herbs. His formula became a standard of European perfumery, famously favored by historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and various royal courts, establishing a legacy that remains synonymous with the "Cologne" fragrance profile to this day.
