Edmond Roudnitska
Edmond Roudnitska (1905–1996) was a legendary French perfumer widely regarded as one of the most influential noses of the 20th century. Born in Russia and trained in Grasse, he became known for his refined, minimalist aesthetic that emphasized clarity and elegance over heavy florality. His work helped define the modern fragrance language, particularly in the post-war era.
Roudnitska created several iconic fragrances, most notably Dior's Eau Sauvage (1966), a crisp, fresh composition that became a timeless classic, and Paloma Picasso (1984), a rich, dramatic floral-amber fragrance. He also worked with Hermès, Rochas, and other prestigious houses. His signature style favored restraint, balance, and a structured approach to composition, making him a pioneer of the "modern" fragrance aesthetic that influenced generations of perfumers.
