Jean Marie Farina (1685–1766) was an Italian-born perfumer who settled in Cologne, Germany, where he founded the world's oldest fragrance house, Farina gegenüber, in 1709. He is historically credited with creating the original "Eau de Cologne," a revolutionary citrus-based scent that shifted the industry away from the heavy, musk-based perfumes prevalent in the early 18th century.

His signature composition, known as Eau de Cologne, was inspired by his memories of Italian spring mornings and featured a balanced blend of bergamot, lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, lavender, and rosemary. The formula became a global success, earning him the title of purveyor to royal courts across Europe and establishing a legacy that remains a cornerstone of perfumery history.
