William Penhaligon was a Cornish barber and perfumer who moved to London in the 1860s, eventually establishing his namesake brand, Penhaligon’s, in the 1870s. His early career as a barber in St. James’s provided the foundation for his entry into the world of luxury grooming, where he began creating bespoke fragrances for his clientele.

He is best known for composing the brand’s original fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, which was inspired by the steam and scents of the neighboring Turkish baths. His work helped establish the house's reputation for Victorian-era elegance and British eccentricity, defining a legacy of traditional perfumery that continues to influence the brand's offerings today.
